My Girls and Their Birthdays

After months of birthday countdowns, B's birthday finally arrived!  She was one excited little girl.  B is the most selfless little girl I have ever met.  I asked, and asked, "what do you want for your birthday?"  And the only thing she could come up with was "my family, and cake."  When you ask her about her favorite time of year, her response always revolves around when her family is around her.  She adores her family.  She adores her sister, and her cousin!  I am grateful each and every day that they are close by.

Uh, c'mon M, its my birthday!

Twelve years ago, I was a single girl in Fort Collins, Colorado.  On March 5, 2000, I went to the county shelter, to "look" at some dogs.  I fell in love with Miss Abbey.  The sweetest most gentle dog in the world, much like my human daughter.  We have been through a *lot* together through the years.  She drove with me from CO to MA, she moved with me from Chelmsford, to Watertown, and then to our current residence.  She has been with me through the tough times, and the best times.  She truly has been a girl's best friend.  Eighteen months ago, she collapsed.  Twice.  In 12 hours.  I cried.  I thought she was going to die.  We rushed her to Tufts Emergency Hosptial (this was 2 months after our children joined our family), where she was diagnosed not with a brain tumor, but with 3rd degree AV node block.  She needed a pacemaker, and she needed it ASAP.  But then she got pneumonia, and spiked a high fever, and her white blood cell count dropped.  A temporary pacemaker was inserted, and when she overcame her infection in the ICU, she went in for a permanent pacemaker.  Abbey is now 13 years old (or somewhere thereabouts).  We celebrate her life on the day I brought her home from the shelter.  The day her life began with me.  I hate seeing her get older, but I have to stop and think how we were able to buy her more time with us.  I wasn't ready to say good-bye.  I'm still not.

And it just so happened that our other shelter dog, Miss Ellie, was born on the same day I brough Miss Abbey home from the shelter.  March 7th.

So, Happy Birthdays to my three FAVORITE girls!!!!

  2. Happy birthday B!

Elfe missed her at the Ethiopia Reads event on Saturday - when we were driving home and I asked her if she had a good time, she said "yes, but how come the big girl didn't come?" and it turns out she meant B!

  4. Biskut continues to show us her inner beauty and sensitivity. Her sparkling eyes and heartwarming smile always light up the room with the joy that she shares with her family and friends. She makes every day a party! Biskut's compassion even extends to her 4 legged sisters who can often be in her way, especially when she's trying to break her hoola hoop record. Abbey is a sweet soul and will always have a special place in my heart, as my first granddog. How lucky can we all get :)
